response to Hornby

I really like the description of the school trip which is totally different from watching paintings in the gallery; for example, “I stood on the edge and loosened a few with my foot”, it recalls what I really like doing when I am young and excited memories. The painting “Nipple Jesus” he mentions is kind of tricky and funny when he relates the painting to himself, “People regard me as an exhibition, too”. I like the writing style of this article. “I hated the picture then. Two minutes ago I’d like it, now I hated it”, which intrigues me because when I read this first, I am really confused first but I am surprised about the reflection of the man has.
What I don’t like, or could say what I confuse here is why the author writing about so much about lives of the man, how awful his jobs before, and even after many pages the author then mentions the main topic “Nipple Jesus”, what kind of relationship between those things. I can't accept the description about the painting "Nipple Jesus", how could Jesus is painted by million nipples, which is kind of make me feel disgusting if I see the painting. “I know what my talent is, my talent is being big”, in the article, when I see that, yeah, the man have deep thinking, but I don’t like this sentence in the paragraph; it kind of implies the man is trying to avoid the real facts and this is just an excuse for him. This sentence is kind of misleading from my view.

Response to Ono

Ono is an amazing female in my point of view after I read this article. “In this experience of art, the viewer or listener loses respect for the current order or arrangement of civilization and thus becomes powerful, like King Kong, and outside civilization, like God.” Those topics are always myths for human beings. When I know that art can also be related to the God, I am really interested how artists can break down the norm to interpret myths like God. Does Ono create kind of painting finally? Or are there other artists reach this achievement? Ono using silence or screeches in her singing also intrigues me. How can she express the pitch, the sound and the feeling the song want to express just by silence and screaming. Ono has many stories which catch my attention, like her stories of three husbands and finding her daughter. Ono is not only a puzzle for the author, but also a myth for me after I read this article.
I don’t think Ono wants to find her daughter back even if she accepts the loss of her daughter when she divorced with his second husband. When she has the third husband who she loves really much, I think she wants to find her daughter back and enjoy family joy. That’s reasonable. The reason why she just lets her daughter go is that she does not find what she really cares about at that time. However, after she met Lennon, she recalls the memory of daughter and she wants a whole family. Loss to finding is totally reasonable for me.

Micro assignment

1. Asymmetrical image: paths on the oval

2. Symmetrical image: table and desks in RPAC

3. Radial image: plant in Thompsonn

4. Person and their surrounding space: my friend in RPAC is taking pictures

5. Person up close: My friend is taking a picture

6. An image from the point of view of ant: an ant is walking on the grass

7. An image from the point of a bird: a bird is standing on the branch

8. A stable image

9. An unstable image: playing decks

10. My name on campus: my name is on the door of my dorm

Before taking every picture, I have to change the camera to proper focus and find appropriate angles for the picture. Compared to taking the first ten pictures, taking the second ten pictures make me oriented and think more actively. When I am taking second ten pictures, I am supposed to  consider whether the picture is symmetric or asymmetric, whether it is stable or unstable, which point of view we have to consider. For example, when I am taking a picture from the point of view of a bird, I stand on the chair and place my camera on the branch of the tree; also, I am trying to image I am a bird at that time, which makes me enjoy very much. However, when I am taking first ten pictures, I can take any objects I like without thinking about that much. I like the second set of pictures I take because I feel I have my own thoughts in each picture.

Walker/Barrett

WALKER

When I read the article at first time, the structure is pretty clear for me to understand, like relationships, differences and similarities of big ideas, theme and subject matter. I really like this sentence, “The big idea provides the conceptual ground for artmaking; the subject matter serves as the context for examing the big idea”, which reminds me of thinking about art is like building up a house--- big idea is the outlines and bases of the house, subject matter are interiors of the house. I also like art work of Jennifer Bartlett, In the Garden. The way she gets the inspiration from an awful little garden is engaging me.
“But it is important all the same to know that this is a systematic and not an improvisational sequence”, I totally disagree with this sentence. In my opinion, art work is created whenever your ideas and good thoughts come up in your mind. How could it be systematic? They way Bartlett paints In the Garden also breaking or bending these rules first.

CUT AND PASTE

I like the example talking about ad for Panzani spaghetti products at the beginning of the article, like a can is denotation, the fresh vegetable is a kind of connotation. This Panzani spaghetti example is more related to daily lives and makes more sense to me. Therefore, the comparison of denotation and connotation in this example seem more obviously. The description of The Denoted Image about three African American women interests me, like expressions on their faces, what kind of poses they acts, what colors of their hairs and what angles their body stands. Those aspects make these three African American women on the magazine vivid. I understand differences among linguistics messages, denoted image and connoted image from the explanation of this magazine image.
I don’t understand why the author uses the three African American women related boot camp as an example for students in the class to talk about. Although it may interests some people, it is still a kind of sensitive. Also, there are females and males in the class, their responses and discussions about this example may not accurate.

Cheesemonkeys/hickey/WeschlerUncannyValley

In Cheesemonkeys, the author mainly talks about four different formal matters, left to right, top to bottom, big and small, in front of and in back of. Big and small, in front of and in back of those two contents attract me most. Big and small can make people confused with objects and people are usually surprised after they find out the result. The bird and plane example in the article interest me and leaves more space for readers to imagine. When we watch the seemingly bird from the whole poster, yes, it looks like a bird; however, after we zoom in and look again, it’s a plane or it’s not. Big and small can make people generate various opinions and ideas because different people think differently. Also, in front of and in back of is another intriguing part. Various options to determine locations of A and B can generate multiple dimensions, like second, third and even fourth dimensions. If we can reach the fourth dimensions, it can explain more situations that the third dimensions can’t tell.
Left and right, top and bottom can be applied in territory defense. In the article, the author points out that the army is able to calculate which directions the enemy will invade as long as they know the enemy will invade them in advance. “They are coming in from the left. Always, always, always, always. ” How people know the enemy invades from left not right? Why they are sure the enemy landing on the top not bottom? In addition, in my opinion, left and right and determine the hierarchy or importance just according to positions of characters on the stage. The appealing position is supposed to be in the middle instead of left or right.

In "the heresy of zone defense", I like the description of basketball shot at the beginning of the article. How the basketball play through different players, and the amazing shot Erving made finally. Erving’s shot is vivid in my mind when I read the article and I can feel I am watching the game at that time. In addition, the example of Jackson Pollock greatly relates the basketball to the art. Basketball is intriguing game. It needs rules proposed by Naismith and coaches in basketball team, which also have relationship with education and basketball programs. “We recognize that the rules that once elevated us into joy now govern us,” I totally agree this opinion. People can watch basketball games with much joy because rules make games avoid disorder. Also, people should obey rules. They both are related and separated.
“And even though basketball is not a fine art”, I disagree this opinion. Playing basketball reflects changes of body and motional actions. A basketball game is like a visual painting in our eyes. “While fine art, which began this century as a much-beloved public spectacle, has ended up where basketball began”, fine arts still has connections with basketball and daily lives. It doesn’t disappear with the appearance of the basketball.

I don’t like the beginning of the article. The title of the article is “Why is man smiling”, but at the beginning of the article, it talks more unrelated topics, like infinite circles, dinosaur research and milk thoughts. I can’t catch any ideas about face, which makes me confused. “the character now looked too real”, actually, although the animation technology develops better, it doesn’t bring just benefits without disadvantages. Although animation technology can make vivid character, it is still worthwhile to use real actors. Too developed animation technology may bring unpleasant and unimagined oppositely outcomes.
“Our job is merely to fool the audience. Once you believe it, we’re done”, this idea evokes my curiosity. How could they fool the audience without 100 percent reality. I like the comparison of face expressions between coaching an actor and the character animators make. I also enjoy the story about the Hollywood lighting director and I like the way the author uses this story to introduce the second method of animation. Examples of nonhuman characters, Shrek and Stuart Little make me more familiar with facial animation technology.
