Walker/Barrett

WALKER

When I read the article at first time, the structure is pretty clear for me to understand, like relationships, differences and similarities of big ideas, theme and subject matter. I really like this sentence, “The big idea provides the conceptual ground for artmaking; the subject matter serves as the context for examing the big idea”, which reminds me of thinking about art is like building up a house--- big idea is the outlines and bases of the house, subject matter are interiors of the house. I also like art work of Jennifer Bartlett, In the Garden. The way she gets the inspiration from an awful little garden is engaging me.
“But it is important all the same to know that this is a systematic and not an improvisational sequence”, I totally disagree with this sentence. In my opinion, art work is created whenever your ideas and good thoughts come up in your mind. How could it be systematic? They way Bartlett paints In the Garden also breaking or bending these rules first.

CUT AND PASTE

I like the example talking about ad for Panzani spaghetti products at the beginning of the article, like a can is denotation, the fresh vegetable is a kind of connotation. This Panzani spaghetti example is more related to daily lives and makes more sense to me. Therefore, the comparison of denotation and connotation in this example seem more obviously. The description of The Denoted Image about three African American women interests me, like expressions on their faces, what kind of poses they acts, what colors of their hairs and what angles their body stands. Those aspects make these three African American women on the magazine vivid. I understand differences among linguistics messages, denoted image and connoted image from the explanation of this magazine image.
I don’t understand why the author uses the three African American women related boot camp as an example for students in the class to talk about. Although it may interests some people, it is still a kind of sensitive. Also, there are females and males in the class, their responses and discussions about this example may not accurate.
