Final Project

Start: I want to begin my project of the theme of dance. I am planning to interview some people like dancing and want to make clips about why they like dancing or their story about dancing, adding some dance movements into clips. Finally, I want to take a clip about myself and tell why I like.
Final video

When I begin brainstorming for my project, I am trying to find out what I like and want to do a project about it. Until I have my dance classes again, I come up with some idea. I am planning to make a video about dancing, my favorite. I want to interview teammates working with me for my final dance project. I would like to ask some questions to all of them, like do you like dance and why, something like that, and make their solutions all together. Another thing is that I want to record their body responses to the music, how they dance when they are happy, and I also want to make that all together and make quickly changing. Finally, I want to take a video about the dance I choreograph with my teammates and my reason liking dancing and feelings at the end of the video. The more important thing I want to point out in my video is free style of our dancing, just changing all the time with feelings changing in the daily life.
When I am doing the project, it is really difficult to separate yes answers from each person because of the short time and I separate again and again and spend much time on that. I want to connect questions and answers and the choregraph of our dance. I insert a piece of dance in the middle of the yes question and why question. After I finish video stuff, I find out it is weired that answers transfer to the dance. So I insert some text and animations in my clips. For the questions, do you like dance? Why do you like dance? Actually I dont use the original one, I took another video for questions and import and export only the sound in the video. However, the screen is dark when the I ask question. I finally figure out that I can have a collection of pictures of teammates and dance movements, which can connect clips well. Finally, the music I first use is kind of modern, but it is not well coincided with my clips, so I choose the music of the dance.
After I finish all work and export the video, when I see the video again, I just found out I made a huge mistake that I forget to make size of the text smaller at the first of the slide. When I go back to work on original video in i-movie, I am really stuck because after I change the words smaller, the sound accompanying with the some parts of video cant have the sound. I really dont know why and I try many times. Finally, I just use the clips which have some mistakes. For the final video, I realize I also made a mistake when I take a video for my teammates. I am supposed to make the screen of video larger when I am taking, because I cant fix it in the i-movie, I think, and I also try when I find that problem. The video I produce is kind of consistent with the idea before I begin my video making.

Failure Prompt

From my perspective, the biggest success in this semester I made was Micro Project 2, which asked us make a map to classes. I was satisfied with the final result I came out based on those reasons. First, the color of arrows I made were my favorite and always gave me a pleasant feeling when I saw it. Secondly, I like pictures I took in snow day and the angle I chose, like the turning point and the corner. Thirdly, some extra interesting things like animal steps made my map look like cute, which I think those gave people good impressions when they saw the map. I also really liked the statement I wrote for this project because I revised it over and over again, adding descriptions of all elements in my map, of reasons I chose those elements, of feelings I had at that time. After I read the statement again, I can kind of felt I was in pictures on the map and still remembered beautiful scenes at that day. Recalling the process I made the map, I found out carefulness was the most important thing when I was doing a project. I learned how to well deal with the distance from each picture, what elements I put on the map can well show my information and let other people understand very quickly. I learned how to well deal with the relationship between each layers and connect each layers, and then make my mp look like a clear route.
To be blunt, the biggest failure in the semester was my micro project 4, making the sound video. My ideas were not creative and not interesting. At the time I was doing the project, actually, I recorded the sound of my backpack, keyboard, elevator and people talking in the library. However, I did some technical mistake and I did not know how fix it. The sound of people talking in the library was very light and I even could not find it when I imported my sound to guitar garage. I did not want the sound of video seemed like having a span when people listened to the sound video, therefore, I deleted that part. I was also not satisfied with my idea because it was too normal. Actually, although the place was library, I also could recorded some interesting things happening in the library to be my source. From Micro project 4, I understood if I want to make a succussful project, I need not only the carefulness, but also a good idea for my project. Project having those two requirements can be improved better by using digital techniques. And some details in the project can make the project look like better.
If let me have a chance to redo one project, I definitely chose micro project 4. I will begin this project from recording another video which is more intriguing, trying to record each sound I want to show in my sound video very carefully, and focus more on details on my video when I adding some mixed sound and other elements.

Micro Project 5

My actions words are mix and layering. To be blunt, I can image many things having characteristic of mixing, but layering is kind of tough for me. I chose the yogurt I make in Morril Commons by myself, since it happens in my daily life, I enjoy the process of making the yogurt, I like eating yogurt very much and I want to combine those words and display them from the thing I like. At the beginning, I don’t realize those words are in my daily life; when I type the word in google images, I found the layering cake in images, then I got that idea. First, I picked up a bowl; secondly, I have some fruits, like grapes, pineapples on the bottom of the bowl, and fruits make make the layering appear more three-dimensional; thirdly, I poured some yogurt on the top of fruit salad; then, I put some cereal which is my favorite on the yogurt. In the process I making, I got three layers, fruit, yogurt and cereal; also, those three things are mixed in a bowl when I eat them.

Response to Carver

When I generally know this article is talking about a blind man, I am really interested in what the blind man’s life is going on in the house of woman. I really like the description of appearance of the blind man and the movement of his eyes, because I also think how the blind man looks like as the same way as the man think. No black glasses, having beards, smoking, using fork and knife well and recognizing the color TV without seeing surprise me a lot. I also like the comparison of behaviors treating to Robert of the man and the woman showing in the article.
What confuses me is why the man wants to talk about something about the old sofa and how can he relate old sofa to the train and something he wants to mention, which kind of doesn’t have any connection. I don’t like the character the husband of the woman, because I think he is kind of stubborn, disrespectful to the blind man sometimes and complacent.

Response to Wallace

This article is talking about a speaker is addressing graduation speech to graduates. Although I am still a undergraduate, this article is kind of related to my life and give me some expectations and thoughts about my future. I really like the author uses didactic short story to illustrate the point he wants to mainly talk about, for example, the story about a religious and atheist having different attitudes to God think from different perspectives on the same event.
The thesis of this article is talking about how to think, instead of teaching people how to think. I am kind of confused when the author addressed that because when the author is writing so many to illustrate how people think, some people may unconsciously think in the way the author tell in some certain situation, like shopping in the supermarket. I dont like the author describes people thinking pessimistically when they are in the traffic jam and shopping in crowded supermarket, because I think, although graduates need to know how different the life they will face, we should provide some better expectations for them.However, some optimistic perspectives in those situations listed is good examples.

Micro project 3

Memo: I choose it because I like to write down events and things I have to finish that day on the memo in everyday morning, because it can make me not forget doing important stuff and finish stuff efficiently.

Effective reminder

USB flash drive: I choose it because I don't like bring my heavy computer walking on campus every day, which makes me really tired every day, so I like to copy important documents and studied notes into USB. In this way, I can study and do my homework in anywhere having computers available on campus.

Useful helper

Lip balm: I choose it because it is the most important thing to make me look energetic when I smile and talk to other people. My lip is very dry all the time because of the weather in Columbus. Therefore, I like to put a lip balm into my pocket, whenever I feel my lip is dry and I can have some lip balm on my lip to keep it feel humid.

Necessity

Gloves: I choose it because I have to walk to my classes from my dorms every day, and the wind here is heavy, particularly in snowy days and rainy days. Gloves can keep me warm and I am able to write and study more concentrated when my hands are warm.

Essentials

Water bottle: I choose it because I need to drink water whenever I am thirsty. There are many places I can access to the water on the campus, having a water bottle is convenient for me. Also, I like to work out and dancing when I am free, so a water bottle is necessary for me on campus.

Everyday demand

From that picture, some objects can greatly reflect my personality. The memo suggests that I am a  careful and organized people; because I am worried about forgetting stuff and slowing down everyday working tempos, I need a memo to remind me every time. Lip balm implies that I am a person caring my appearance so I can't let my lip look dry and less of energy. Gloves reflects that I know how to protect, take care of myself and be independent in the college, having gloves which keep me warm can prevent me from having a cold. Those three stuff reflect my personalities, but water bottle and USB flash drive not greatly show who I am, because those two things, I think, are essential almost for every student in daily lives and on study in the college.

Responses to Kaprow, Weschler "Desert", and Saunders

I like the author relating art to lives and using tooth brushing and elbows moving
examples which happen on our every day. When I am reading how tooth brushing and elbows moving examples, I am inclined to lift my elbows and look at myself tooth brushing in the mirror and watch carefully about my own steps and actions in daily lives in order to find the connection between art and lives. I also like the detailed description of development of process the author watching toothbrush from actions to smell. The more careful the author watch tooth brushing, the more easier to find more related information. I also like the author explain the connection between art and lives by illustrating the long history of art in the West in the Hellenistic period, ranging from the body to environment.
However, I think examples similar to tooth brushing are not enough in the article. How can readers be persuaded the conception of art relating to lives only through one example. I think the author need to describe the how walking, talking, stretching and other actions imply the art.
The author describes how he developing from a very tactile person to a perceived person to the around environment. I like he uses the experience in the flat desert, nothing happen and a good place to reflect. In addition, I like the way he proves his improvement. He goes back to places where he went before and experience the same places from totally different perspectives and have different feelings. When he addresses how people instill feelings to art and express the art, those are questions I really want to ask, and I am satisfied answers the article are given, like Micael Heizer taking situations in the form of photomurals and technologies applied in several desert sites and alter them into art. Those information activates my curiosity and makes me want to read and learn more.
What I confuse is why the author talking about he sells the studio, sending art pieces back to artists and whether loosing art identity. The comparison between the way he acquire feelings from the nature and the way Irwin express his ideas on his artworks. To be blunt, Irwin producing such amazing work by seldom touching the nature is amazing, but what the purpose of talking about it here. I think it doesn't make sense to the following paragraphs he talks about.
I am obsessed with the sentence, "If we could conduct our lives with the kind of openness that sometimes comes with proximity to death", which gives me a vivid situation of flight accident example and reminds me what I will act and what I will think about at the edge of death. In the article, Mr. Saunders is the author many people admire because he can induce ineffable feelings into his short stories. Even though we read his stories over and over again, there is still like a gap between the way  we understand and the feeling he wants to express. In the article, I like he talks about the death topic, which is mysterious and interesting, like the concept of humanist verities the author mentioned, how could we predict things which are going to happen in the future after we died. Everything in the universe is intriguing and kind of scared. I am curious about exploring it but I am also afraid to find out what I do not want to see.
One thing I am really confused is about why the author describes so many about how much different he and Mr. Saunders from others in the restaurant, and why he tells about the death of his friends. Are there some connections between death of his friends and the a small topic of death in the article. When the author highlights how brilliant Mr. Saunders's short stories from perspectives of many famous people, I can feel his surprising achievements but I want to know about how he composes his stories, like giving some examples about his stories. And in the article, the author mentions "He writes like something of a saint", I think it compliments too far.

Wexner Review

Main parts in Wexner Center are about clock, light club and photographs having various themes. In light club, there is much glass having wonderful colors sorted being a line. When I am standing in front of it, I am like facing a mirror. Also, many irony mirrors here are built by interesting shapes, like rectangle and triangle, and those are all 2 dimensions. In front of mirrors, there are a large projectors and reflecting videos on mirrors. I know people use projectors to reflect information on the screen; reflecting on mirrors intrigues and surprises me. When I am walking through light clubs, I am kind of in a cinematic environment. Having some popcorn, sitting on the soft sofa and watching the film is what I only thought at that time.
In photograph section, a series of small size of photographs place zigzag; this is photographed by Hank Wills Thomas. I walk along the photo and want to catch every moment on photos; a woman goes walk for a dog, some boys sit on stairs in front of house door, a woman wave hands and smile, like saying hello to me, and two boys are running. Although the background of photos is all about different houses, different people make photos seem more vivid.
Facing this zigzag photo series, there are photos talking about immigrants from different countries and different states in New York City. Most of them live in Queens and Brooklyn. Paul Kang, was from Korea 30 years ago, has electronics store in New York. Her daughter is studying in MIT. In addition, a man has a pizza store here about 30 years. Those catch my attention at the beginning. Photos also talk about some Thai restaurant, Café, truck and auto repair store, news stand and shipping stand. Big smiles from people on the photo and vivid image of their stores really make me know well about them and want to go to their stores to buy something.
The most photograph make me feel downcast is about Negro children and old home on badly eroded bland near North Caroline, photographed by Marion Post Wolcott. There are four photos in a series and one of the photos is about second and third grade children are making up Negro song and dance at May Day.
There are some funny events when I go to Wexner Center. Actually, I didn’t go directly to Wexner Center, but I went to Fine and Arts Library. I found there was an interesting Cartoon museum. All of drawings have been published in magazine and talk about women, marriage and love. There were many original comic drawings on the desk, which make me feel excited and surprised. Outside of the museum, a famous cat, Carfield , which is my favorite cartoon, sits on the chair. That day just a big surprise for me.

Response to Cardiff, Miller and Power of sound

Similarly, I like the process of setting up speakers, subwoofers and stumps in the forest as what “I” feel in the article. Definitely, in the forest, the environment is more intriguing and some suddenly surprising events can happen, like the loud sound almost shudder everyone. Actually, I don’t like the situation “I” tucking earphones and walking back and forth on the station. No surprise, no specialty and nothing interests me. I don’t even know what is the purpose of doing this?
I like each story behind the artwork of Miller and Cardiff, like “The Dark Pool” may be a closely self-portrait of Miller and Cardiff, and this is also a reason why they resist selling it. I am curious about what their mood are when they are creating this artwork? Also, “The Murder of Crows” talks a story about the tough time they have been through and also the time they plan to adopt their infant daughter. One artwork is about them and another one is about their family. They can put their feelings, no matter nervous and sad into the pieces. However, I am confused why themes of their pieces are negative, and I don’t see the happiness neither from descriptions of their artworks or just directly from names of artworks.

Micro Project 2

Actually, when I know my art education class is in Ohio stadium, I totally lost my direction and I don’t know which direction I should go at first because Ohio stadium is really large. Therefore, I asked my friend who also took this class and went to the class before. She told me the entry of the class is on the east of the campus. Based on this information, I kind of know the general direction I am supposed to go. I think the entry should be facing the direction of the way to Independence hall instead of facing the parking place next to Morrill Tower. With the help of my friends, I don’t have to walk around the whole stadium to find just one entry. It sounds like crazy.
In the morning, at the first day to art education class, I chose to walk to my class because I was afraid of losing direction when I was taking a cab. So you can see in the map I made, I had some animal shape steps on the started place. To be blunt, I went off much earlier because I was not sure whether I could find the destination. I went out of my dorm, turned left, and there was a picture of stadium and that was actually the direction I faced. The reason I chose this picture as my starting picture was that I could see the stadium where I had art education class, seemingly very close to me and much easier for me find, even though  everyone knows stadium is very large. Then I went down some steps, and turned right, and the second picture  about stairs appeared and I used a orange right arrow on the map because I was changing my direction now and I wanted readers to understand clearly. Turning to the third picture, I went straight, and the road was quite long, however, the sunshine was warm and no one blocked in front of me. I still remembered at that time I was listening to the music and suddenly I was obsessed with beautiful scenes in front of me, therefore I took this picture. Then I turned left, and I took this picture just at the intersection, because I was fascinated by the newspaper box in the image appeared in my eyes and I felt pleasant when I turned left and saw such spacious scene. Finally, I went straight, and I saw the post on the door about the direction of art education class. Yeah! That was definitely my destination. The big words about art education can prove that I find the class room which was really difficult to find, so I had to take this picture. I also put "Finally" at the end of my map, which really express what kind of a relief I feel at that time! I chose orange arrows in the map because I like orange color which is very explicit and makes people feel energetic, and arrows won't confuse people reading this map. On the way to this class, there are many constructions which are confused me. My head was turning around and trying to find signals about art education in the Ohio stadium. To be honest, I felt kind of nervous when I found out only few minutes left, but luckily, I arrived in time. The weather was snowing and I was playing with snow by me feet on the way to the class. It makes me feel relaxed and joyful to go to the class. Walking in the cold weather is kind of boring and tough, I find a better way to relieve my mood.

response to Hornby

I really like the description of the school trip which is totally different from watching paintings in the gallery; for example, “I stood on the edge and loosened a few with my foot”, it recalls what I really like doing when I am young and excited memories. The painting “Nipple Jesus” he mentions is kind of tricky and funny when he relates the painting to himself, “People regard me as an exhibition, too”. I like the writing style of this article. “I hated the picture then. Two minutes ago I’d like it, now I hated it”, which intrigues me because when I read this first, I am really confused first but I am surprised about the reflection of the man has.
What I don’t like, or could say what I confuse here is why the author writing about so much about lives of the man, how awful his jobs before, and even after many pages the author then mentions the main topic “Nipple Jesus”, what kind of relationship between those things. I can't accept the description about the painting "Nipple Jesus", how could Jesus is painted by million nipples, which is kind of make me feel disgusting if I see the painting. “I know what my talent is, my talent is being big”, in the article, when I see that, yeah, the man have deep thinking, but I don’t like this sentence in the paragraph; it kind of implies the man is trying to avoid the real facts and this is just an excuse for him. This sentence is kind of misleading from my view.

Response to Ono

Ono is an amazing female in my point of view after I read this article. “In this experience of art, the viewer or listener loses respect for the current order or arrangement of civilization and thus becomes powerful, like King Kong, and outside civilization, like God.” Those topics are always myths for human beings. When I know that art can also be related to the God, I am really interested how artists can break down the norm to interpret myths like God. Does Ono create kind of painting finally? Or are there other artists reach this achievement? Ono using silence or screeches in her singing also intrigues me. How can she express the pitch, the sound and the feeling the song want to express just by silence and screaming. Ono has many stories which catch my attention, like her stories of three husbands and finding her daughter. Ono is not only a puzzle for the author, but also a myth for me after I read this article.
I don’t think Ono wants to find her daughter back even if she accepts the loss of her daughter when she divorced with his second husband. When she has the third husband who she loves really much, I think she wants to find her daughter back and enjoy family joy. That’s reasonable. The reason why she just lets her daughter go is that she does not find what she really cares about at that time. However, after she met Lennon, she recalls the memory of daughter and she wants a whole family. Loss to finding is totally reasonable for me.

Micro assignment

1. Asymmetrical image: paths on the oval

2. Symmetrical image: table and desks in RPAC

3. Radial image: plant in Thompsonn

4. Person and their surrounding space: my friend in RPAC is taking pictures

5. Person up close: My friend is taking a picture

6. An image from the point of view of ant: an ant is walking on the grass

7. An image from the point of a bird: a bird is standing on the branch

8. A stable image

9. An unstable image: playing decks

10. My name on campus: my name is on the door of my dorm

Before taking every picture, I have to change the camera to proper focus and find appropriate angles for the picture. Compared to taking the first ten pictures, taking the second ten pictures make me oriented and think more actively. When I am taking second ten pictures, I am supposed to  consider whether the picture is symmetric or asymmetric, whether it is stable or unstable, which point of view we have to consider. For example, when I am taking a picture from the point of view of a bird, I stand on the chair and place my camera on the branch of the tree; also, I am trying to image I am a bird at that time, which makes me enjoy very much. However, when I am taking first ten pictures, I can take any objects I like without thinking about that much. I like the second set of pictures I take because I feel I have my own thoughts in each picture.

Walker/Barrett

WALKER

When I read the article at first time, the structure is pretty clear for me to understand, like relationships, differences and similarities of big ideas, theme and subject matter. I really like this sentence, “The big idea provides the conceptual ground for artmaking; the subject matter serves as the context for examing the big idea”, which reminds me of thinking about art is like building up a house--- big idea is the outlines and bases of the house, subject matter are interiors of the house. I also like art work of Jennifer Bartlett, In the Garden. The way she gets the inspiration from an awful little garden is engaging me.
“But it is important all the same to know that this is a systematic and not an improvisational sequence”, I totally disagree with this sentence. In my opinion, art work is created whenever your ideas and good thoughts come up in your mind. How could it be systematic? They way Bartlett paints In the Garden also breaking or bending these rules first.

CUT AND PASTE

I like the example talking about ad for Panzani spaghetti products at the beginning of the article, like a can is denotation, the fresh vegetable is a kind of connotation. This Panzani spaghetti example is more related to daily lives and makes more sense to me. Therefore, the comparison of denotation and connotation in this example seem more obviously. The description of The Denoted Image about three African American women interests me, like expressions on their faces, what kind of poses they acts, what colors of their hairs and what angles their body stands. Those aspects make these three African American women on the magazine vivid. I understand differences among linguistics messages, denoted image and connoted image from the explanation of this magazine image.
I don’t understand why the author uses the three African American women related boot camp as an example for students in the class to talk about. Although it may interests some people, it is still a kind of sensitive. Also, there are females and males in the class, their responses and discussions about this example may not accurate.

Cheesemonkeys/hickey/WeschlerUncannyValley

In Cheesemonkeys, the author mainly talks about four different formal matters, left to right, top to bottom, big and small, in front of and in back of. Big and small, in front of and in back of those two contents attract me most. Big and small can make people confused with objects and people are usually surprised after they find out the result. The bird and plane example in the article interest me and leaves more space for readers to imagine. When we watch the seemingly bird from the whole poster, yes, it looks like a bird; however, after we zoom in and look again, it’s a plane or it’s not. Big and small can make people generate various opinions and ideas because different people think differently. Also, in front of and in back of is another intriguing part. Various options to determine locations of A and B can generate multiple dimensions, like second, third and even fourth dimensions. If we can reach the fourth dimensions, it can explain more situations that the third dimensions can’t tell.
Left and right, top and bottom can be applied in territory defense. In the article, the author points out that the army is able to calculate which directions the enemy will invade as long as they know the enemy will invade them in advance. “They are coming in from the left. Always, always, always, always. ” How people know the enemy invades from left not right? Why they are sure the enemy landing on the top not bottom? In addition, in my opinion, left and right and determine the hierarchy or importance just according to positions of characters on the stage. The appealing position is supposed to be in the middle instead of left or right.

In "the heresy of zone defense", I like the description of basketball shot at the beginning of the article. How the basketball play through different players, and the amazing shot Erving made finally. Erving’s shot is vivid in my mind when I read the article and I can feel I am watching the game at that time. In addition, the example of Jackson Pollock greatly relates the basketball to the art. Basketball is intriguing game. It needs rules proposed by Naismith and coaches in basketball team, which also have relationship with education and basketball programs. “We recognize that the rules that once elevated us into joy now govern us,” I totally agree this opinion. People can watch basketball games with much joy because rules make games avoid disorder. Also, people should obey rules. They both are related and separated.
“And even though basketball is not a fine art”, I disagree this opinion. Playing basketball reflects changes of body and motional actions. A basketball game is like a visual painting in our eyes. “While fine art, which began this century as a much-beloved public spectacle, has ended up where basketball began”, fine arts still has connections with basketball and daily lives. It doesn’t disappear with the appearance of the basketball.

I don’t like the beginning of the article. The title of the article is “Why is man smiling”, but at the beginning of the article, it talks more unrelated topics, like infinite circles, dinosaur research and milk thoughts. I can’t catch any ideas about face, which makes me confused. “the character now looked too real”, actually, although the animation technology develops better, it doesn’t bring just benefits without disadvantages. Although animation technology can make vivid character, it is still worthwhile to use real actors. Too developed animation technology may bring unpleasant and unimagined oppositely outcomes.
“Our job is merely to fool the audience. Once you believe it, we’re done”, this idea evokes my curiosity. How could they fool the audience without 100 percent reality. I like the comparison of face expressions between coaching an actor and the character animators make. I also enjoy the story about the Hollywood lighting director and I like the way the author uses this story to introduce the second method of animation. Examples of nonhuman characters, Shrek and Stuart Little make me more familiar with facial animation technology.
